The Companion Relationship Between
the Diocese of Maryland and the Diocese of Accra

The Most Reverend Justice Ofei Akrofi
Bishop of Accra, Archbishop of the Anglican Church of the Province of West Africa

"We belong to one another and therefore, to Christ; we uphold one another with a view to living the mission of the church....We have been led to forge partnership with the Diocese of Maryland....In partnership it is not uncommon for people to touch on what they can get out of the partnership. Of course, some are better endowed than others are; so naturally they can give a bit more than the other partner can. But partnership, if is to be genuine partnership, should be less about what I can get and more about what I can contribute. I urge us in our Diocese to ask ourselves: what can and do we contribute to this partnership, in spite of our poverty. Even poor people have something to contribute - what of Africa's religiosity and spirituality? What of our inspiring and enervating music and songs? What of our art? I charge every parish to consider and share with me what it is that they can contribute to the partnership ....I have a special plea to make to our partners abroad. You may have heard me say that some of our economic woes are due in part to unjust and unfair international order and practice. If we are in communion, then our pains are your pains. We do not seek charity, but we want you to help us by sensitizing business and government in your country to pursue policies that foster true equality and justice, dignity for all; to purse business and policies with a human face."
from the Bishop's Charge to the Seventeenth Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Accra, August 23-27, 2000
